Ilya Espino de Marotta

Executive Vice President for Engineering and Programs Management

Ilya Espino de Marotta has worked for the Panama Canal Authority for over 30 years – in several different engineering positions. In May 2002, Ilya was selected to the Canal Master Plan coordinating team, under the Office of the Administrator, where she participated in the development of the Panama Canal Master Plan and the Expansion Proposal. She subsequently transferred to the Programs Development Office where she contributed to the planning and execution of the Expansion Program

In May 2007 she was appointed Executive Manager of the Resources, Planning and Project Controls Division of the Engineering and Programs Administration Department which was tasked with the execution of the entire Expansion Program. In the same year, she was appointed Executive Vice President for Engineering and Program Management. This Vice Presidency is responsible for all engineering aspects of the Panama Canal, including preparing designs and specifications, issuing and managing all the construction contracts and heading-up the Panama Canal Expansion Program.

With the growth and execution of her responsibilities, she has been recognized on numerous occasions with a number of awards and honors for her many contributions to a host of programs, both professional and civic.

She has also presented lectures on the Panama Canal Expansion Program for national and international audiences. She was awarded “Outstanding Woman of the Year” by the Panamanian Association of Business Executives. She made the cover of Forbes Magazine Central America when recognized as one of the 50 most powerful women in the region. She was the 2016 honoree for “Women Who Make a Difference” by the International Women Forum. She also holds a Distinguished Woman Award from the Association of Professional and Business Women of Panama.

Ilya is a member of the Board of Directors of the Ronald McDonalds Charity Organization of Panama; Women Corporate Director (WCD) and the International Women Forum (IWF).
