“The RICS Fire Safety Conference will provide you with crucial information and best practice on the key areas of focus for fire safety. I urge you to attend this event, which will address the challenges to be met in response to the Hackitt report on Building a Safer Future, enabling you to better advise your clients.”
David McCullogh, Chair, RICS Fire Safety in Tall Buildings Working Group and Conference Chairman

The tragedies of major fire incidents in recent years have cast a spotlight on fire safety standards, building regulations and risk management. Numerous inquiries have found a need for significant improvements and called for professionals operating within the built environment to take accountability for their role in driving fire safety standards within the sector.

This is leading towards a major cultural shift, with consideration of fire safety at every stage of a building’s life cycle essential to ensuring improved outcomes for the industry as a whole. Understanding the core elements are crucial, from design and engineering, to maintaining fire safety during occupation and ensuring ongoing compliance.

RICS Fire Safety Conference brings together leading experts in the field to address the key considerations, identify best practice and adopt strategies to ensure they are adhering to the highest standards.

Attend this conference to benefit from expert discussion around technical content and guidance, including:

  • The Independent Review on Building Regulations and Fire Safety. Discussions around the Final Report of The Independent Review on Building Regulations and Fire Safety.
  • International Fire Safety Standards. Multiple differing standards in materials testing and certification, national building regulations and guidance on managing buildings, mean there is no single authoritative way to work, causing confusion, uncertainty and risk to the public. This has led to the creation of International Fire Safety Standards (IFSS) for the first time at a global collaborative level. Learn how this standard will bring greater consistency by setting minimum levels of fire safety and professionalism across the world.
  • The Golden Thread – Accountability throughout the building lifecycle. Our panel of experts will discuss and explore the different roles and responsibilities of professionals involved in ensuring and maintaining fire safety throughout the building lifecycle. Discover the different types and stages of fire management, how the “Golden Thread” can be achieved, as well as how to integrate fire safety technology effectively.
  • Passive fire protection and insulation: discuss the myths and reality of fire rated foams, as well as the latest trends in the industry for passive fire protection and insulation, in order to ensure best practice.
  • Fire-related building defects. Understand façade cladding defects and failures, including an examination of different cladding materials, penetration through walls, cavity barriers and compartmentation.
  • Integrating fire safety into different property types. Listen to a combination of case studies, technical knowledge and strategies, addressing the key considerations needed for high-rise and low-rise buildings, as well as commercial vs residential.
  • Fire alarm systems for apartments - A new approach. Identify the latest fire detection technologies, notably fire alarm systems. Understand the grades of residential fire alarm systems and how this technology is used to complement ‘stay put’ strategies, whilst integrating it with other safety systems. Explore how to monitor and analyse data from residential systems via the Cloud, as well as cost implications of lifetime ownership.
  • Total fire engineering. Explore the technicalities of total fire engineering strategies, design and compliance standards, as well as considering evacuation procedures as part of the engineering process.
  • Fire testing and risk assessments. This session will identify current approaches to fire testing and risk assessments in the industry. Our expert speaker will examine the different approaches and assess whether they are indeed fit for purpose, as well as who is qualified to undertake them.
  • Human behaviour and fire. Considering human behaviour, particularly in a crisis, is essential when planning fire and emergency evacuation procedures. This session looks to examine evacuation vs. stay-put strategies as applied in different circumstances and the potential outcomes associated with each different approach.
  • Remediation - Not as straight forward as it seems. This session will use relevant case studies to examine who is responsible for remediations works, discuss worst case scenarios, as well as top tips to avoiding exposure and limiting liability for duty holders.
