RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year Awards 2018

RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year Awards recognise and celebrate the most inspirational young surveying professionals in the UK. Judges will be looking for outstanding role models who work to the highest standards of professionalism and act as advocates for the profession.

The winners of each category will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in November 2018 in London: with the ultimate accolade of RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year 2018 awarded to one of the category winners.

Entries are invited from any of the following:

  • self-nomination/entry by apprentices, trainees, associate members and newly qualified RICS professionals
  • employers nominating their employees
  • clients nominating individuals with whom they have worked
  • colleagues wishing to recognise another team member’s efforts

Closing date: 27 July 2018

The closing date for entries is Friday 27 July 2018 and entrants must be based within the UK and aged 35 years or under (as of 1 November 2018).

Award categories

There are nine categories in which nominations are invited; representative of key areas of practice in the UK. 

Apprentice of the Year

This award showcases an apprentice who is currently working towards or has completed a surveying apprenticeship within in the last 12 months. It recognises excellence in an individual who has made a significant contribution to the workplace; demonstrating progression in their career, or is an outstanding role model/champion for apprentices.

Asset and Facilities Management

This award recognises those working within facilities and asset management, corporate real estate and property management services; who have advised clients (landlords or businesses) to maximise the effectiveness and/or added value in areas including investments, tenancies or lease terms.

Building Surveying

Sponsored by Imfuna

This award recognises outstanding achievement in all areas of building surveying and building control; an individual who has been fundamental in projects which build, restore or develop structures, or has demonstrated drive and motivation in aspects of building regulations, health and safety or energy efficiency.

Land (Rural and Urban)

This award seeks an inspiring individual who has had a positive impact on the environment, planning or in any aspect of the management of land, including geomatics/geospatial surveying and property assets in the countryside.

Project Management

Sponsored by Faithful+Gould, member of the SNC-Lavalin Group

This award recognises an individual with an exceptional ability to lead and manage building and civil engineering projects to achieve agreed business outcomes and demonstrate excellent communication and management skills.

Property Agency (Residential and Commercial)

This award is designed to reward the outstanding talent of an individual who achieves exceptional results and provides quality customer service in the fields of buying, selling, or letting property; either residential or commercial.

Quantity Surveying and Construction

Sponsored by Wates

This award showcases an individual who demonstrates evidence of strong commercial, analytical, negotiation and communication skills to achieve value for money in building and civil engineering projects.


This award looks to reward a young individual who shows excellent skills and customer service in their chosen field of valuation.

Mentor of the Year

Sponsored by Macdonald and Company

RICS apprentices, trainees and newly qualified professionals aged under 35 years of age, are invited to nominate those who have supported and inspired them to progress in their careers. There is no maximum age for this category but mentors are required to be RICS qualified (Assoc or MRICS).

Find out who scooped last year's category awards and meet Jonathan Manns MRICS: winner of the overall RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year.

Jonathan, formerly Director and Head of London Planning at Colliers International, beat close to 150 professionals to gain the national title, as well as the Land category accolade. As a prize, he was presented with a brand-new Volvo V40 D2 (on a 23-month lease) courtesy of principal sponsors of the awards, Santander Consumer Finance.
