Construction projects must assess risks to a greater extent than other projects because of the nature of uncertainties, which increase substantially with duration and complexity. There are numerous restricting factors, such as quality of human resources, materials, site conditions, climatic conditions, productivity of labour and equipment, designs and specifications.

Proper management of risks has the potential of ensuring successful delivery of the projects. Every construction activity is associated with risk factors, which may be internal or external. Due to uncertainties associated in every stage of the project, risk management is being implemented in various organisations to minimise the loss and increase the profit associated with the project.

Exercises and discussions

Training will be conducted through interactive exercises and include discussion of topics through project case examples.

At the end of this one-day training session, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of nature of risks in general and risks associated with construction projects from initiation to completion.
  • apply their knowledge in carrying out risk identification by using various tools and techniques and document the output in a risk register.

Ms Vanita Ahuja, PhD, PgMP, MRICS — Professor and Program Director, School of Construction, RICS SBE, Noida

Vanita Ahuja is Professor and Program Director at RICS School of Built Environment, Amity University in Noida, India. She has over 20 years of industry and academic experience in the area of Construction Project Management. In industry she has worked on projects of varying nature and has extensively conducted training programs for executives in the area of Construction Management. In policy making area she is part of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) working groups drafting national level guidelines for ‘Construction Project Management’ and was the convener of the group that drafted guideline ‘Risk Management’. She also actively volunteers for Project Management Institute (PMI) at national and global level. She has published and presented research papers in International Conferences and Journals and also volunteers as part of the Editorial board and Reviewers Panel for International Journals.

She is passionate about spreading the knowledge of Project Management and increasing its practice and would like to contribute in adoption of Project Management for Social Sector projects and Urban Development projects of Built Environment Sector. These projects touch the lives of people on day to day basis and extensively contribute in increasing happiness quotient and productivity of the society.

Mr Vinod Nakra, FRICS, FIE, FIS, FIV, FITP — Professor Emeritus, School of Construction, RICS SBE, Noida

Vinod Nakra, ME, MSc, is Professor Emeritus at RICS School of Built environment at Delhi/NCR since the last four years. He is on the Panel of Indian Roads Congress and Indian Council of Arbitrators as an Expert and Arbitrator and an Expert Neutral with Mediation & Conciliation Network. An ex-defence officer who served in the Corps of Engineers for 34 years and rose to the rank of a Brigadier (Chief Engineer). During his service he handled various multi-disciplinary infrastructure and Residential Projects and other operational assignments.

Post retirement he served in the construction industry with multinational companies as Project Director, Senior Vice President, Project Controller in L&T, RITES/Delhi Metro as Contract Expert, IJM India (Malaysia), AFCONS and others, where he acquired wide ranging experience in handling major projects including Townships, part Golden Quadrilateral, Delhi Metro and Delhi International Airport (T-3).

He has been a Professor at College of Military Engineering, Pune and Visiting Professor at Govt. College of Engineering at Pune and School of Planning and Architecture New Delhi. His teaching interests include Contracts Practice and Claims Management, Risk Management, Dispute Avoidance and Resolution including Arbitration. He has a number of papers to his credit. His recent publications include a Case study award by PMI and a paper on Innovative Urbanization strategies.
